We are in the final steps of our series on seven strategies for getting a job with a criminal record. I think this one is the most critical. It’s how you show in action and words that you are a different person than your past. It’s called the elevator pitch.

An elevator pitch is being able to make your case — in the case explain your merits as an employee — in the amount of time it takes to ride an elevator with someone. Be clear, make a strong point and be brief!

But you need not just one elevator pitch, but two! This is Step 6:

HAVE TWO ELEVATOR PITCHES READY

An elevator pitch is a short convincing sales pitch designed to be given in about the same amount of time as it takes to ride an elevator with someone.  They are commonly used in sales, and if practiced and done well can be a powerful tool to tell your story (both good and bad) in a convincing, positive, and memorable way.

  1. Have one pitch to sell the employer on you. Knowing the job description, and a little about the company helps, so you know what the main points are for you to connect with.
  2. Many employers automatically assume the worst when they hear someone has a criminal history.  (I know because I did!). Have an elevator pitch prepared to describe your criminal history in a direct and non-threatening way. Your goal is to prove that your past is in your past.
