Imagine a sales job where you only have to make one sale and it will continue to pay you every two weeks for as long as you want. How hard would you work to make the sale? Getting a job is THAT sale!
When starting to look for work, the mental outlook we take is critical. As I explained in Step 1, a realistic view that getting a job with a criminal record is difficult must be PAIRED with an optimistic view that it doesn’t matter how many “nos” you hear, you only need one yes.
Both are true. Both are important to keep in mind. It’s not easy to get a job with a critical record, but when you get that ONE YES, you will start making money and keep making it as long as you continue to work hard.
Few things will set you up for that positive future as getting the job. So let’s move on to Step 2 in my 7 Strategies for Getting a Job:
STEP 2 is this:
MAKE THE SALE: GIVE THEM A REASON TO WANT TO HIRE YOU
It’s funny how many job applicants are disrespectful to the receptionist. If they only knew that sometimes the hiring manager asks them what they thought of a specific applicant. Maybe who you thought was just the receptionist is the office manager filling in at the front desk.
- Have a good attitude, even when you don’t feel like it since people can detect your mood and attitude.
- The goal of a job application and interview is to make a good impression so they remember you and hire you.
- A good impression starts with a good attitude, which includes being courteous, respectful and professional.
- Keep your answers direct and to the point as much as possible. Talking too much, or giving too much detail, can turn an interviewer off.
- If you get an interview, be punctual, but not too early as more than 15 minutes early could be an inconvenience on the employer or interviewer.
Be yourself. Be positive, but make the sale. You are selling you, so present yourself well. Practice so you can be confident and get that job. Every person you meet is someone to make a great impression upon. You never know who it will be that gives you that first, all-important sale!
